Our Impact

Out of all the cancers, lung cancer kills more people than breast, colon, and prostate cancer combined. There are researchers across the world working tirelessly to find a cure and create a world free from lung cancer. Due to these individuals and organizations who continue to find new developments for the prevention, diagnosis, and cure of lung cancer, today there is hope the survival rate will increase.

Breath of Hope Ohio has the honor and privilege of being a community partner to The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James).

A Note from Dr. David Carbone

A Breath of Hope Ohio was founded by two of my patients at The Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) whose lives, like too many others, were affected by this diagnosis.  And the fact that both of them were young never smokers brings home the fact that anyone can get lung cancer. These individuals were both full of life and eager to do what they could to create better treatments for lung cancer patients. Recognizing that federal funding is flat and that lung cancer does not receive the dollars we so desperately need to make an impact, my patients came together to shed light and help eradicate the #1 cancer killer for both men and women - Lung Cancer. Breath of Hope Ohio was born out of the desire to advance science and create effective treatments for all lung cancer patients.

Breath of Hope Ohio has raised more than $1,000,000 since 2015 and these funds have gone directly into recruiting talented researchers and advancing lung cancer research at the OSUCCC - James. Philanthropy enables us to do projects that result in important discoveries that we might not be able to do otherwise. I am inspired by the contributions of time and talent from the Breath of Hope Ohio team and supporters. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of so many individuals and their families affected by lung cancer!

Please join us on May 20, 2023 for our seventh annual Breath of Hope Ohio gala!

Sincerely,

David P. Carbone, MD, PhD

Continued Sucess in Lung Cancer Research At The James

Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of both men and women - by far - and yet there is very little public awareness of this fact and of the progress we have made in spite of this low awareness. We have doubled the 5-year survival in the last decade and in some situations where the average survival was 4-5 months decades ago, we are now seeing survivals 10-20 times that! All of this progress has been the result of research and the lung cancer team at the the James is at the forefront of this research.

Please spread lung cancer awareness like survivor Heidi Onda is doing with her white ribbon project!
